So you have seen the ADT Home Security commercials on television and think you know a thing or two about the company, right? Did you know that ADT has been around for over 100 years? Do you know what ADT stands for? Like many successful home security companies ADT Home Security is part of a larger company called ADT that has been around for a very long time. However, ADT does not have the public past that some of its competitors have so you may not be as familiar with the parent company of ADT as you are with ADT Home Security. The history of ADT is pretty interesting and filled with things that not many people know.

ADT started as a company that delivered telegraphs to people by hand. In 1874 there were 57 telegraph companies that decided to affiliate themselves together and call themselves American District Telegraph otherwise known as ADT. They existed to get information to their customers and in the 1880s the call box was invented and now customers could talk directly to ADT instead of just telegraph. Call boxes slowly grew and soon ADT was delivering messages to people all over their region. In the early 1900s ADT was experimenting with technology and using the technology of the day to keep track of their delivery personnel so that they knew where they were at all times. It was state of the art back then and soon ADT was catching the eye of some of the larger communications companies.

Merger And Then Public Listing

In 1901 ADT was purchased by Western Union to create one large communications company. The next move was inevitable as communication giant AT&T bought the Western Union / ADT company in 1909. Between 1910 and 1930 ADT started to create and sell burglar alarm systems for businesses and fire alarm systems to municipalities. The company continued to grow until the World War II era when they started to develop and sell the first automatic alarm system in response to the shortage of law enforcement in the United States due to the war draft.

In 1969 ADT Home Security was put on the New York Stock Exchange and has been a successful company every since. ADT Home Security has been through several buy outs over the years until they were bought by Tyco in 1998. Today ADT Home Security is one of the largest security companies in the world.

Like the old question, if a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it still make a noise? the same question can be asked about burglar alarms.

Like the old question, if a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it still make a noise? the same question can be asked about burglar alarms. If an alarm goes off and no one hears it, is the home still burglarized? Since most burglars would rather break into a home when no one is home, an alarm monitoring for home security system is necessary if the home or business owner hopes to catch the perpetrator.

By contracting with a company for alarm monitoring for home security system the homeowner can add a level of confidence that even when they are not at home, or a local alert fails to deter a person from entering the premises, the proper authorities will be contacted. Most companies that offer alarm monitoring for home security system staff a call center 24-hours a day, and when an alarm is received, typically through an automatic dialer system, they first attempt to contact the owner of the alarm to insure it is not a false alarm.

If contact is made, and the homeowner knows the correct security code, the authorities are not contacted. However, if contact is not made with the homeowner or the person answering the phone does not know the correct code, the alarm monitoring for home security system company will contact the local police or fire department, depending on the code received.

Medical Emergencies Can Also Be Included In System

Most of the alarm monitoring for home security systems is done on three levels, depending on the level of service to which the homeowner subscribes and the types of sensors installed. When sensors indicating a break-in are tripped, the alarm monitoring for home security system company will notify the local police. If fire sensors are tripped, it will contact the local fire department, as well as the police.

With many of the alarm monitoring for home security system companies, additional protection can be provided for medical emergencies as well as for personal threats. Persons with a medical condition that may not be able to reach the telephone, can carry an emergency alarm activation device and when this trips the alarm, the monitoring company will dispatch an ambulance.

There is also usually include a handheld device that can trip the alarm for a break-in in event someone breaks into the home while the occupants are present. This activates a silent alarm and notifies the alarm monitoring for home security system company that there is imminent danger and it will automatically apprise the local police of this dangerous situation.

Everyone has seen their commercials on television and nearly everyone has heard an armored car referred to, at least once, as a Brinks truck. So what is Brinks Home Security and what is their story? Every old western movie you have ever seen has a Brinks security vehicle of some kind in it with some of the stage coaches being robbed in the movies have the name Brinks right on the side. So how does a company get such a reputation that they wind up in the movies? The story of Brinks Home Security is a natural spin off of the original Brinks Company and the two stories go hand in hand. The history of the Brinks Company is a very long history and full of some of the most interesting names and events you may have never expected.

Brinks Home Security is part of the Brinks Company which was started in 1859 as a delivery company. Over the years they had developed armored cars for delivering some of the more precious cargo that they have carried. Some of the cargo carried by Brinks in their famous armored cars is the bat used by Hank Aaron to break Babe Ruth’s all time home run record, the first rocks brought home by the astronauts from the moon, and the diamond engagement ring that Richard Burton gave Elizabeth Taylor. Add to that the security of the original Declaration Of Independence and you have a company that has based its very existence on its reputation of providing the best quality security available in the United States and quite possibly the world.

Bringing It Home

In 1983 the Brinks Company founded Brinks Home Security and what they wanted to do was provide every home owner in America the same level of security that Brinks was used to offering some of the richest people in the country and some of the largest corporations. It has all paid off well as Brinks Home Security is now one of the largest providers of in home security services that include fire warning and carbon monoxide monitoring along with theft monitoring. Brinks Home Security expanded their service into Canada and now their client total is over 1,000,000 customers and growing.

With a long history of security behind them Brinks Home Security looks to be a major player in the home security business for a long time to come. You may never have to protect the original Declaration of Independence but it has to help knowing that the company that did is also protecting your home.

Are you in the mood to reinforce the security of your home? This is about an excellent time as today’s world is full of psychopaths, thieves and desperate human beings who are always on the prowl for a fast buck and attacking a potential victim. Fortunately, we live in a time where the advancement of technology has brought the price down sufficiently to make home security systems affordable and within the reach of the common human being.

How Can You Get The Best Suited Security System For Your Home?

What do you do when you want to buy any particular item? The first thing would be to find out what its cost in the market is and what it offers you. Then you would need to compare these two factors (and maybe others that are applicable) with what different vendors offer before you decide which one offers you best value for your money.

Applying the same principles, you would need to compare home security systems available in the market before you decide which one would be best suited for your purse and home. The factors that you need to take into consideration when you compare home security systems would be (i) the cost, (ii) the facilities it offers, (iii) the mode of installation, (iv) the size and (v) the distance or area it can place under surveillance.

There are many sources from where you could gather this information so you could compare home security systems, such as the Internet, your friends and relatives who are using such security systems, window shopping, advertisements, and so on. You need to research well and painstakingly because this would mean an investment which you would not repeat in the very near future and hence, it should be done right from the first shot.

When you compare home security systems you should keep in mind that you would not be able to get a perfect fit and hence, you would need to compromise on certain aspects. You need to make up your mind which aspects of the security system would be absolutely essential for you and which ones you could do without. Similarly, you should also work out what is the maximum and minimum that you could afford to spend on the system so you could concentrate your research in that range.

Last but not the least definitely, you would need to check out as much as possible about the customer services offered by the different providers. This is a very important aspect to consider when you compare home security systems because a bad customer service could turn a good buy into a nightmare.

As technology advances and the cost of technology drops more people are starting to do their own do it yourself complete home security systems. With the products that are available do it yourself complete home security systems are not a bad idea and you not only save yourself money on installation costs but you can also rest assured knowing that a group of strangers did not install your home’s security system, you did it yourself with one of the many do it yourself complete home security systems people are creating these days. You just need some basic components.

Door Bolts And Window Locks

The first part of a good do it yourself complete home security system has nothing to do with electronics or cameras. Securing your home is the first step towards good home security and putting in sliding bolts on all of your outside doors and locks on all of your windows will help a great deal in that area. It also makes them more effective if you use them so make sure you lock up your doors and windows every time you leave the house or you lock up for the night.

Lights Outside

No do it yourself complete home security system is complete without good lighting. Even the cameras you will install will benefit from good lighting so make sure you install motion detecting lights around the outside of your home and on the perimeter of your property if you are able. The more light you have the more you can see and that is a huge advantage over the intruder that is trying to sneak in under cover of darkness.

Cameras

You can get wireless, internet ready, stand alone security cameras for $100 each or less that will broadcast a signal on the internet for you to monitor. It is hard to imagine do it yourself complete home security systems without video surveillance and now you can do video surveillance that is accessible by any computer connected to the internet anywhere in the world. It makes any do it yourself complete home security system simple to set up and use.

Action!

All you need after that is a quality computer with a lot of storage space for video surveillance digital images and you are set. Make sure you load a good home security software on that computer and make sure you learn how to use it. Once you realize how powerful your do it yourself complete home security system really is you will wonder how you ever felt safe without it.

Home security systems goes back a little further than you may expect but the history of home security systems is a long one depending on how you look at it. Back in the medieval times kings had their own home security systems in their castles. Guards were posted in and around the castle and a moat was dug around the castle to try and fend off invaders. Sometimes the moat was filled with water or sometimes it was filled with a flammable liquid that could be ignited from the castle if invaders were caught in it. The notion that there were alligators in castle moats is a legend and very rarely were any dangerous creatures put in the castle moats.

The history of home security systems marched on and for a very long time the only people that could really afford home security were the wealthy. Prior to the 1980’s home security meant expensive camera surveillance and the hiring of several guards to patrol the grounds. But as the 1980’s approached the history of home security systems started to take a turn towards the average home owner and as technology rapidly advanced then so did the history of home security systems. In the 1980’s companies like ADT and Brinks, names known for their communication and security histories for decades, decided to start offering security for the home. The home systems were not the same as the commercial systems but they had the same effect and soon millions of American homes were protecting themselves from intruders. As society became more violent from the 1950’s to the 1990’s people started taking their home security very seriously. Then technology kept advancing and as we launch into the 2000’s the history of home security systems takes a turn towards more of the do it yourself approach.

The End Of Home Security Companies?

Today the history of home security systems is littered with advances in technology that allow anyone that can hook up a DVD player to be able to set strategic cameras around their property and monitor their house, inside and out, on the internet from any computer in the world. Some companies started selling do it yourself home security kits and people started to feel safer with the notion that they were installing their home security system rather than some stranger walking around their house and learning the weak spots in the home’s security.

Today the history of home security systems is headed straight toward the world of do it yourself and more and more elaborate systems are being created that can be easily installed and monitored by the home owner themselves. Maybe soon there won’t be a need for home security companies anymore.

Your computer contains a lot of your personal information and probably documents and images that are important to you. After you get done spending the time and money to make your home secure you may want to invest a little effort into home computer security. You never know what could happen and taking care of home computer security means that all of your personal information and data are safe if anyone were to either hack into your computer or just physically take your computer out of your home. Take some basic steps and you should be well protected.

For home computer security inside the computer you just need to remember a few very important rules about the internet. Never click on a link from within an email. If it is a legitimate company you should be able to log in to their website and do whatever they need you to do. Clicking on a link from an email to confirm personal information is a scam of the internet criminal. Always have at least your Windows firewall up when you are surfing the internet. If you leave a port open someone is bound to get in and without a firewall that port is wide open. Always have anti-virus software running on your computer at all times. Anti-virus software will help you filter out the malicious code and keep your home computer security system running smoothly.

Back It Up And Take It Out

If your data is especially important then as part of your home computer security you could either do a back up to an offsite server or just take your back up disc off site to a storage location for safe keeping. Many people with home businesses do this and in case your computer is stolen you still have your data off site and can retrieve it whenever you need. This is also a good idea to protect your data in case of a fire. If your home burns at least you know you can easily retrieve your personal data and get back on your feet in no time.

An even better home computer security idea is to use a removable hard drive in your computer and lock it in a safe place at night. That way if someone steals your computer they do not get your hard drive and that is where the most important information is. Plus they wind up getting a useless computer which is a small consolation.

In today’s world, people are beginning to realize the importance of home security. Many of these people are taking steps to ensure the safety of their family and their belongings. Doors, windows and property are all being made more secure to prevent intruders from gaining access. Many people, however, often overlook another common entry point that most of us have in our homes – our computers. This part of our home is attacked by a different kind of intruder, also known as a hacker. Our computers have become a very big part of our lives in the last several years. We use them to communicate, do our banking, and even our shopping. This is why home network security is becoming so important.

What Are The Risks

Many of us have large amounts of information on our computers that we would not want someone to have access to. More and more people are doing all of their financial business on their computers. Credit card information is also something that most of us have on our computers for online shopping. With the amount of information that is usually stored on our computers, many of us would be in serious trouble if the security of our system was compromised. Many people run businesses and earn their living from their home computers, so for them, home network security is that much more important.

Computer viruses are also a major concern when it comes to home network security. Viruses are a type of malicious code that can be designed to do any number of harmful things to your system, including destroying your hard drive. If this happen you will loose everything you had.

In addition to the destructive things that can be done to your computer, hackers can gain access to your system in order to steal your identity or access sensitive financial information or anything else they want. In other cases, a person could use your computer to attack a third party. This way, the damage caused could not be traced back to him. These are just a few of the ways in which your home network security is at risk.

Steps To Take

There are many steps you can take to prevent your system from falling prey to those who would seek to destroy it. Some of these steps involve purchasing software, and some are just a matter of changing the way you do things on your computer.

First, you want to make sure you have some type of anti-virus software installed on your computer. There are a vast number of these software packages to choose from. The most important thing with anti-virus software is keeping it updated. New viruses come out everyday that are designed to beat the latest virus protection software. Another home network security measure is to have firewalls in place on your system. This will also help prevent attacks from hackers. These too, need to be constantly updated to effectively protect you.

Another major step you can take to protect your computer is to just be more careful of what you’re doing. Never open an e-mail attachment from a source that you are not familiar with. Even this, won’t fully protect you, as some viruses have been known to spread because they came from familiar sources. This goes for programs as well. Never run a program unless you’re sure you can trust the source. Frequently backing up any important data that is saved on your computer is very important in case you do experience problems.

People always talk about home security, and they may even lock a couple of doors once in a while, but very few people actually take just a few extra steps necessary to really make your home secure. There are several things you can do to improve your home security that do not necessarily involve buying and installing an expensive home security system or having strangers going through your house to give you an evaluation of where all of your home security weaknesses are. Some things are minor and other things take a little effort but in the end if what we are talking about here is the safety of your home and your family then that is probably worth a few extra minutes of your time.

Some of these home security tips seem so obvious that it is amazing that people do not just do them automatically. Always lock your garage doors when you are not home or even when you are home and especially when you turn in for the night. Would be thieves and criminals can hide anywhere in your garage and if you are not locking those doors to the outside then chances are you are not locking the doors inside your garage either which makes one clean path for a criminal or intruder. So take home security very seriously and make sure all of your doors are locked when you are not home, or at night, but especially watch for the garage doors as that is one place that the intruders will be trying first.

Lights! I Need Lights!

Make sure the outside of your property is lit very well so that you can see anything that comes on to your property. Many people install motion sensitive lights that only light up when someone comes near them. These are great and for the purposes of home security they can let you know when someone has entered your property through something other than the front door. Motion sensing lights are great for when you are doing things around the house and do not have a light on you. Plus you should always have every square foot of your property lit for home security.

When you sleep at night have a phone nearby in case you need to contact the police or other emergency personnel. You never know what can happen at night and if you hear someone breaking in downstairs, and you are upstairs with no phone, then you either better have a plan B or hope the intruder does not come up the stairs. Always have something at your bedside to protect your home and your family with from night time intruders.
